High Rep Weight Potential – Something From Last Year’s Dip Odyssey

I found something in the archives, a short log about dips from roughly a year back that I found interesting.

From it a quote :

“High reps and volume will make you strong. Honestly even stronger than low reps will.

Don’t tell powerlifters this, it causes all sorts of insecurity issues.” – me

I got a smile from that, but what was also interesting was some of the logged numbers.

60 x bw

45 x bw + 45lb

Now I’ve done over 100 dips before, this was at under 230, probably around 210, but the above numbers were at between 255 and 265.

I have an old performance standard of being able to dip and chin with added weight equal to 300lbs total.

“Can I dip & chin if tomorrow I woke up as a 300lb fat body?”

For a pullup variation that answer is usually yes, but with dips it’s downright comical.

The same log showed 5 x bw + 135,
which would be dip reps at 400lbs or nearly so.

But 45 x bw + 45 that’s 45 reps, at 300+ lbs.

Absurd, to anyone but me.

Relatedly I’ve long held that with honest effort a 50rm tends to resemble what most contentedly would call a 10-15rm.
